 A screening is a valuable way for parents and professionals to learn how a child’s development compares to that of other children the same age.

A developmental screening is one of the most important steps you can take to support your child’s success in school and beyond. Even if you feel confident that your child is developing on track, a screening can offer reassurance and peace of mind. It also gives us a chance to share resources to help your child continue meeting important milestones, as well as to introduce you to the many programs and services SCCDC offers for children from birth to age five.

If a delay is detected, research shows that the earlier it is identified and intervention begins, the greater the chances for meaningful improvement in your child’s development.

• Hearing – How well a child can hear and respond to sounds.
• Vision – How clearly a child can see and process what they are looking at.
• Communication – Includes how well a child follows directions and how clearly they can be understood when speaking.
• Fine Motor – How a child uses their hands for tasks such as eating, drawing, or using small objects.
• Gross Motor – How a child moves their body, including running, climbing, jumping, and catching a ball.
• Social/Emotional – How well a child plays with others, interacts with adults, and transitions between activities.
• Self-Help – How independently a child can manage daily tasks such as eating, dressing, and using the toilet.
• Cognitive – How a child thinks, learns, and solves everyday problems.
